Event 4 - Women in Science

2025-01-14 18:30 ~ 21:30, 1st Floor Dining Area

Schedule

Description

I can’t think of a single reason why I want to be a surgeon. But I can think of a thousand reasons why I should quit. They make it hard on purpose. You either take that step forward, or turn around and walk away. I could quit. But here’s the thing: I love the playing field.

----Grey’ Anatomy 2005

While the ratio of female to male students in the field of ocean and environmental sciences was steadily increasing at all levels in the past decades, the number of female scientists stays low at higher ranks. How to make those female scientists stay on the field?  This workshop aims to promote women initiative and involvement in the research of oceanography and environmental sciences. We are going to dialog in this workshop with graduate students, posdoc, junior and senior scientists on the topics on gender preference in admission and recruitment, academic policy of gender equality, the balance between family and work as well as the response to administrative and service activities.

Event 6 New Book Launch — “Marine Fishes of China and Adjacent Waters” (in Chinese only)

2025-01-14 16:50 ~ 18:30, 1B Meeting Room

Description

This event features the launch of the new book “Marine Fishes of China and Adjacent Waters”, edited by Min Liu, Kwang-Tsao Shao, Yvonne Sadovy de Mitcheson and Xiao Chen. This book includes three volumes, and 1943 marine fish species with color photographs (specimen and/or alive) available. The book also includes a definitive list of the total marine fish diversity — 4061 species — known from China’s coastal and adjacent waters. The large number of species represents a national challenge if we want to safeguard such biological wealth for posterity. The book highlights the research gaps, particularly on reproduction and habit. You will meet the editors and the publisher, who will accompany you in exploring the beauty of marine life and come to recognize the richness and vitality of marine fishes.

Event 7 – XMAS & ASLO Storytellers

厦门海洋环境开放科学大会 & 美国湖沼与海洋学会 “科学故事人”

As part of XMAS2025, which is co-sponsored by ASLO, we are bringing this program to Xiamen.  And we need your help!

This year, we're partnering with local schools to bring Storytellers to a whole new level! We will have Storyteller sessions from January 13-17, reaching children aged 4 -12. We'll be looking for volunteers to share some of their time with these curious students and speak about the joy of aquatic sciences. Everyone is welcome to volunteer – while most events will be in Chinese, we are also trying to arrange sessions with language schools, so English storytellers are also welcome!

What is the ASLO Storytellers Series?

A group of people sitting in chairs Description automatically generated with low confidenceThe Storytellers Series is an ongoing activity led by the ASLO Education and Engagement Committee that aims to connect conference attendees with local communities. People of science of attending the ASLO conference visit local schools and/or libraries and read aquatic science-themed books to children and talk about their careers. ASLO provides the books and donates them to the school or library after the event. The series has reached hundreds of students all over the world at various ASLO sponsored conferences.
