Estimate of ocean heat content and steric sea level change
(Invited) Lijing Cheng* , Institute of Atmospheric Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences |
Steric sea level contributes to 30%~50% of the GMSL rise, thus reliable estimate of ocean heat content (OHC), salinity and then steric sea level is a key task in estimating and understanding sea level change. This presentation will introduce recent advances in OHC/salinity estimation, including data bias correction, data quality-control and mapping method. These new developments lead to a revised and improved estimate of OHC and then steric sea level, which gives important implications to the complementary sea level budget. Furthermore, the presentation will also briefly discuss the issues of uncertainty estimate: currently there is lack of a comprehensive uncertainty estimate for OHC that could account for all error sources, traditionally the spread among datasets were used with is not physical tenable (the assumption is Gaussian distribution and no common systematic error), thus a major revision is needed. |
